Valentine Sales Will Support Church World Service

Beautiful handmade valentine cards to send to your loved ones, shut-ins, and others, are still just $5 each this year!

That $5 will purchase a thick, all-wool blanket for Church World Service (CWS) to provide to a disaster victim who has been impacted by a flood, fire, earthquake, hurricane or other misfortune. Sale dates will be Sundays, Jan. 27 and Feb. 3 and 10.

Valentines also are available in the Calvary UMC office, Monday through Thursday (8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Church World Services’ roots are in disaster response. The organization formed in response to an emergency: the aftermath of World War II, when CWS provided more than 11 million pounds of food, clothing and medical supplies to war-torn Europe and Asia.

Church World Services reached its 70th anniversary in 2016. Responding to emergencies remains a cornerstone of their work. In recent years, CWS has responded internationally after earthquakes in Nepal and Haiti, floods in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Cambodia, volcanic eruptions in Indonesia, and earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan. CWS is a founding member of the ACT Alliance, which brings together the resources and expertise of different agencies throughout the world.

In the United States, CWS responded to Superstorm Sandy and numerous floods, tornadoes, wildfires, hurricanes and other storms throughout the nation. CWS responded following the terror attacks of September 2001 and to many natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina. The U.S. emergency response program focuses on serving vulnerable individuals and families in disaster-affected communities, who are having the hardest time recovering. Let’s help CWS “blanket the world with love,” through purchases of handmade valentines!
